Funny Themes for Commander Decks Mtg
Commander is one of the most fun formats there is in Magic: The Gathering and through all of my years of playing I still love coming back to the table with a group of friends and all of our fun commander decks. While "fun" can be very subjective, I have been able to assemble a list of legendary creatures that make the most fun commanders to play both with, and against.
The most fun commander decks to play are the decks that you love the most. While this is subjective, I always find if you can have some interesting synergy between your cards, a little bit of politicking, and a deck that will be tough for your opponents to win against is always the most fun.
There are so many different kinds of ways to play Magic and so many different commanders. I have detailed so really fun strategies and really fun commander decks to play below.

What Makes a Fun Commander Deck?
The topic of a fun commander deck can be subjective. People have fun playing commander in all different ways. Some people are very competitive and find fun in winning the game as fast as possible. Some people love long and drawn out games so they can spend lots of time with their friends. Still some others like games that have big swings in momentum between players and the politicking of the game. There are so many ways to play the game and have fun doing it. Ultimately, what makes a commander deck fun is up to you. There are no right or wrong answers as long as you are having fun.
What Are Fun Commander Decks For Beginners?
Just starting out playing commander can be a very overwhelming time. There are so many choices to make. If you are just starting out, I would highly recommend one of the pre constructed decks sold by wizards of the coast. They usually do a fantastic job with the commanders in the deck and they make for a very fun and playable experience.
From the new set of commanders, I would recommend the red/green deck that has Chishiro, the Shattered Blade as the commander. This deck is really fun and has a ton of synergistic combinations. Some of the best commanders come from preconstructed decks too. Breya, Etherium Shaper and Edgar Markov are two incredibly powerful commanders that came out of these decks.
In addition to playing an new preconstructed deck, you can upgrade that deck to make it a bit better. Not only is that a great way to make a fun commander deck, but it is a great way to make a fun budget commander deck.
To do this, cards in the preconstructed decks would need to be removed based on, synergy, mana cost, and whether or not the card is a good card for the deck. Once these cards are removed and cards that have a better mana cost, more synergy or are otherwise great cards are added, your commander deck will be much more streamlined.
If you are a beginner and preconstructed decks are not your idea of a fun commander deck, I suggest making a single color commander. One of the most confusing and the most expensive parts of the commander deck is its mana base. By streamlining this to one color, you eliminate that confusion.

Who Are Fun Commanders To Play Against?
This can be a tricky question to answer. While it can be fun to win a game of commander, your opponents might find it miserable. An example would be playing against a Narset, Enlightened Master deck that only has extra turn cards and extra combat cards. Eventually the person playing Narsett will combo off and everyone else has to pretty much just sit back and watch as they eventually lose the game.
Any kind of stax effect decks or sometimes land destruction decks can be a little less fun to play against. Generally, any commander that could abuse those effect wouldn't be very fun to play against.
Some commanders that would be fun to play against would be commanders that play a more "fair" way to play magic. Most of the commanders listed below in the Top 10 list I would consider "fair" depending on the build of the deck.
As a side note because I do believe that it is worth mentioning, group hug decks can be fun to play against at first. They can be very deceiving by letting you draw an extra card, or by letting you play something for free. Generally while they look like they are doing something nice for you, the rest of the deck is made to take advantage of their abilities.
What Are Fun Commander Themes?
There are many different themes to fun edh decks. Some of them are: tribal, combo, group hug, super friends, stax, big mana and control. There are many more but these are a good example of some of the different themes that are out there. I will define these different themes below.
Tribal
Tribal is a theme that bases itself around creature type. For example, you could build a tribal version of Kykar, Wind's Fury that would focus itself around spirts. This is because he makes 1/1 spirt tokens and can sacrifice a spirt for a red mana.
There are also other tribal decks like Kaalia of the Vast. A tribal deck with Kaalia at the helm cares about having a lot of angels, demons, and dragons that you can play for free to to Kaalia's triggered ability. In short, a tribal deck has some fun interactions with other creatures of the same type.
Combo
Combo is a theme seen in many competitive commander decks. Most of these decks will try to assemble certain cards with certain effects to pull of the win. For example, Sliver Queen has an infinite combo with Mana Echoes. Once a sliver enters the battle field with Sliver Queen out, at least 2 mana can be made. With that two mana, you can use Sliver Queen to make a 1/1 sliver and the process will repeat for as many times as you want. This is important to note because according to rule 725.1b in regards to taking shortcuts:
"Occasionally the game gets into a state in which a set of actions could be repeated
Magic: The Gathering Comprehensive Rules rule 725.1b
indefinitely (thus creating a "loop"). In that case, the shortcut rules can be used to determine how many times those actions are repeated without having to actually perform them, and how the loop is broken."
While combo decks do not all contain infinite combos they contain some of the most synergist cards.
Group Hug
Group Hug decks appear to be some of the most fun commander decks to play against. Their looks are often deceiving though. An example is one of the most popular group hug decks, Zedruu the Greathearted.
Zedruu tries to change control of different permeants so that way at the beginning of your upkeep, you can draw as many cards and get as much life as possible. In addition to this, Zedruu decks cast spells that have negative effects for the controller like Delusions of Mediocrity or Aggressive Mining.
Super Friends
Super Friends decks are some of the most fun commander decks to play. They are called super friends due to all the planeswalkers in the deck. Atraxa, Praetors' Voice can be a great commander for a super friends deck.
Planeswalkers are generally incredibly powerful and a deck that plays a lot of them with a way to make them even better (Atraxas ability) makes for a very fun and deadly combination.
Stax
Stax decks are generally the least fun decks to play against. They are focused around preventing the opponent from playing the game by destroying their lands, making them play lots of extra mana for spells and other generally annoying strategies. In my opinion, stax decks do not make for some of the most fun commander decks.
Big Mana
Big Mana, as a theme, is exactly that. Cards that require a ton of mana to cast. This could be spells with an "X" in their cost like Fireball or just very high mana value spells like Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre. Big mana can make for very fun edh decks.
Control
Control in my opinion, get a bad reputation. Lots of people might view control as not fun because they try to prevent their opponents from play their big spells by either countering them or removing creatures. These decks win by preventing you from executing your game plan with counters and removal while they implement theirs.
What Are the Most Fun Commander Precons?
As discussed in previous sections, commander precons are created and sold directly by Wizards of the Coast. These products, generally, make for really fun budget commander decks. They are a one time fee and then you get a whole commander deck. While they aren't the most powerful and can be upgraded down the line, they are a great source of new decks with unique cards. This makes them a great product for both new and old magic player alike.
As far as which commander preconstructed decks are the most fun, I have provided a list below with the commander on the cover .
- Draconic Domination – The Ur-Dragon
- Breed Lethality – Atraxa, Praetors Voice
- Plunder the Graves – Meren of Clan Nel Toth
- Devour for Power – The Mimeoplasm
- Upgrades Unleashed – Chishiro, the Shattered Blade
These decks are all really great and can make for some of the most fun commander decks while on a budget. They also have such potential for room for improvement and upgrades.
Commander is such a fun and entertaining format of magic. If you are like me, you are always on the look out for fun edh decks. I have been able to gather a list of these fun commander decks below.
Top 10 Most Fun Commander Decks
The below is a list of decks that I and many others have found fun. Each one can be built as a fun budget commander deck or a more expensive one. Generally, the more expensive the budget of the deck is, the higher the power level. The higher the power level of a deck, the more competitive it can be.
10. Breya, Etherium Shaper
This can be one of the most fun edh decks to play. You can make Breya, Etherium Shaper into a 4 color artifact deck. She is so strong because her ability makes her so versatile. She has an uncommon kind of way of removing creatures that give them -4/-4 until end of turn. For the bigger threats, Breya can continue to sacrifice artifacts until they are 0/0s or less. Do to state based actions of the game, this would send the creature to the graveyard.
| Pros | Cons |
| Breya is a Strong Removal Spell That Synergizes With Herself | Expensive and Complex Mana Base |
| Lots of Fun Artifact Synergies |
9. Kwain, Itinerant Meddler
Kwain, Itinerant Meddler is one of the most fun commander decks I've ever played. This deck can be built around a typical group hug strategy with a twist. This deck can win in the most fun way by using a "If you draw a card and you have no cards in you library, you win the game".
This ability can be best seen on Jace, Wielder of Mysteries, Laboratory Maniac or Thassa's Oracle. Drawing a ton of card can be really fun and when you have a bunch of counter spells and removal, no player will generally assume anything of you.
| Pros | Cons |
| Fun Experience For Everyone | It Makes For a Very Long Game |
8. Sliver Queen
As described before in the section about combo decks, Sliver Queen can be a very fun commander deck to play. To have fun with her you could do an infinite combo with Mana Echoes, but you can also run her as a very fun tribal commander.
I put this deck on this list because slivers are a pretty unique tribe. While they can and do power up other slivers you control, they do so in a variety of ways. A lot of the times they can give each other interesting key words and different abilities.
| Pros | Cons |
| A Very Fun And Unique Tribal Deck | The Cards in the Deck Are Expensive With Not Many Reprints |
7. Atraxa, Praetors' Voice
An Atraxa, Praetors' Voice deck can be made multiple ways. My favorite way to make her is using the super friends strategy discussed previously. With her ability to proliferate at the begining of the end step, this means you can add an additional loyalty counter to each planeswalker if you want to.
If you partner this with other cards that manipulate counters like Doubling Season, then you will be able to use the ultimate ability of your plansewalker in no time.
| Pros | Cons |
| One of the Most Powerful Decks On This List | Very Expensive Deck |
| Can Play Nearly Any Planeswalker in Magics History |
6. Xantcha, Sleeper Agent
Xantcha, Sleeper Agent is probably the most fun when played politically. This lets the group of players address threats together and be able to use their extra mana to draw more cards. Thats what makes Xantcha one of the most fun commanders for the whole table.
| Pros | Cons |
| Very Political in a Pseudo Group Hug Way | Politicking Always Has a Chance to Backfire |
| Card Draw In Colors That Struggle With That |
5. Kykar, Wind's Fury
This commander, Kykar, Wind's Fury is a can have a few different kinds of decks. Kykar can be designed more competitively around storm or control. But my favorite way to play Kykar is by playing cards like Polymorph and other cards with similar effects. This turns those little 1/1 tokens into something random and huge in the deck.
| Pros | Cons |
| Competitive EDH Viable | Moderately Expensive Mana Base |
| Large Variety of Decks |
4. Esika, God of the Tree
Esika, God of the Tree makes for a very versatile 5 color legendary tribal deck. While the mana base has to be a bit complex for this deck, there are no limits color wise as to which cards can go into this deck. Legendary tribal is a rather unique kind of deck. That's one of the things that make Esika so fun to play.
| Pros | Cons |
| Very Powerful | Very Expensive and Complex Mana Base |
| Has the Possibility of Playing Creatures For Free |
3. Prosper, Tome-Bound
With Prosper, Tome-Bound, you want to be casting cards from exile. This is what makes him one of the most fun commanders. He doesn't specify that they have to be cards that he exiles to be the only cards to be able to get the treasure tokens. This makes him able to trigger off of so many other card abilities.
| Pros | Cons |
| Abilities Synergize with themselves | Not as fast as other commanders |
| Can Make a Lot of Treasures | You Must Exile a Card At End Step |
2. Kaalia of the Vast
This is one of the most fun edh decks I have played. I love tribal decks and Kaalia of the Vast is best done as such. There are tons of crazy demons, angels, and dragons across magics history. This deck can also be a crazy out of nowhere kind of win, which can make for some very fun and interesting game play.
| Pros | Cons |
| Low Mana Value | Very Specific Cost |
| Very Prone to Removal | Expensive Mana Base |
1. Maelstrom Wanderer
Maelstrom Wanderer is one of the most fun commanders I've ever played. A great way to make this deck is to cascade into big scary creatures that will take control of the game when they enter. Once those big creatures hit the
702.85a Cascade is a triggered ability that functions only while the spell with cascade is on the stack. "Cascade" means "When you cast this spell, exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card whose mana value is less than this spell's mana value. You may cast that card without paying its mana cost if the resulting spell's mana value is less than this spell's mana value. Then put all cards exiled this way that weren't cast on the bottom of your library in a random order."
Magic: The Gathering Comprehensive Rules Rule 702.85a
With this in mind, you can get some big and crazy thing to happen in your game seemingly out of nowhere.
| Pros | Cons |
| Big Game Breaking Creatures | High Mana Value |
| Lots of Ramp | Expensive Mana Base |
| Great colors for removal |
End Step
There are lots and lots of fun commander decks but I hope that this article has helped to highlight the most fun commander decks. There are many more fun commanders but these are the ones that I would consider the most fun.
